BOBBY ATKINS

We Do It For You / It Wouldn’t Be The Same

Thunderbolt Records  TB – 4488  (42:15)

“For this new CD, Bobby performs 16 new songs; numbers you know and love.”  Hmm.  Must be the moonshine.  Still, this contrary observation from  Jacky True (yes, of those estimable True Brothers) hits the mark in one respect -  in this latest collection from Bobby Atkins, the veteran performer offers his take on some of  the best known  songs in country music.  The familiarity of the material (at least to older fans) doesn’t make this set any less enjoyable, however.  Atkins is in fine form, and his pleasant  baritone treats the covers with warmth and charm.  The True Brothers make a guest appearance, and their own song, We Do It For You, is a highlight.  (www.honkytonkin.com)

Bobby Atkins is a well known name in bluegrass music. He has played guitar and banjo for the likes of Bill Monroe, Stonewall Jackson, Mac Wiseman and Flatt & Scruggs. This CD though is country and consists of 14 classic country songs like "Your Old Love Letters", "Early Morning Rain" and "Release Me" plus the two newly written title songs. Among the musicians Bobby has his sons, Mark, Jason and Matt that do a good job. The CD is produced by Jacky True (from the True Brothers), Dick Minor and Bobby, himself. The best songs on this very good traditional country-CD are; "New Patches", "Miller's Cave". "15 Years Ago" (the best track), "We Do It For You", Kristofferson's "Come Sundown" and "Before I Met You". But actually there isn't a single bad song here. Even if you've got all the songs before this CD is still worth buying and Bobby has a great voice and does them just as good as the orginal versions. This CD and many more records with them can be bought at Bobby's and Mark's website www.bobbyandmarkatkins.com
