Liner
Notes for When my friend Bobby Atkins called me to ask if I would do the liner notes for his new album. I was ecstatic and said here's my big chance to show off my literary skills I asked when he needed them. And when I did I already knew the answer - yesterday! So with pen in hand here I set at our local Denny's Restaurant trying my best to come up with something new to say about Mr. Atkins. At 3 am in the morning, but that's a hard job to do for Bobby has been written about by so many writers down through the years, in countless books, magazines, newspapers and of course album jackets. Well I took the job so I guess I'd better act like I know what I'm doing. I'll start by saying that Bob's been making music for as long as I can remember or anyone else for that matter. He did stints with the Father of Bluegrass Music Bill Monroe as one of the Bluegrass Boys. Waxed many a platter for Old Homestead Records, 13 Records, Rural Rhythm as well as for the Decca label. He's released discs with the likes of Jim Eanes, Vassar Clements and Tony Rice. Shared the stage with Stonewall Jackson, Mac Wiseman and the late Joe Stone. Appeared on the Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs' Martha White Flour TV Show and the motion picture "Preacher Man Meets Widow Woman"; and even on the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry. He has a banjo in the Bluegrass Hall of Fame (Hall of Honor). I will say he sings a fine song be it country, grass or whatever. For he has even took a stab at rock and plays a mighty mean banjo, etc. You may have read about his exploits in Bluegrass Unlimited along with that of his band the Countrymen. For this new CD, Bobby performs 16 new songs; numbers you know and love. Like Porter Wagoner's classic "Your Old Love Letters"; Bobby Bare's "Come Sundown"; Charley Pride's "Kiss an Angel Good Morning". Not to mention Bobby's renditions of songs made famous by George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and last but not least the immortal Hank Williams. There's even a couple of new ones penned by yours truly. Which just happens to be the title of this collection "We Do It for You" / "It Wouldn't Be the Same". Which are my favorites, but maybe I'm prejudice * you never can tell concerning these matters. Oh by the way I also show up on the track "Early Morning Rain" a Gordon Lightfoot success story with two other fellows. Who were just hanging around doing nothing. So me and Bobby put them to work. (ha-ha) I believe their names are Dick and Roger. I'm not sure though since we are not that well acquainted. Well this looks about as good a time as any to skedattle out of here. But before I go please buy this package and give it a spin. You'll enjoy yourselves immensely and if that isn't enough we need your money. Sincerely Jacky True (The True Brothers) PS: Would somebody shine my boots for me? You know when you're a friend of BA's you got to look sharp. |
